John Hanc

John Hanc is a writer specializing in active sports, fitness and local history. A long-time contributing writer for Long Island, New York-based Newsday and to Runner’s World magazine, his work has also appeared in such publications as AARP Bulletin, The Boston Globe Sunday Magazine, Men's Fitness, The New York Times, Playboy, Reader's Digest, Smithsonian and Yoga Journal.

His seventh book, Jones Beach: An Illustrated History, was published by Globe Pequot Press in April, 2007. His previous books included Racing for Recovery: From Addict to Ironman, (co-authored with Todd Crandell, Breakaway Books, 2006); Running for Dummies (co-authored with the late Florence Griffith Joyner, IDG Books, 1999) and The Essential Runner, (Lyons & Burford, 1994).

A “practice what you preach” educator, Hanc teaches classes in journalism and writing at the New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury, where he is an associate professor. In both 2004 and 2005, he was selected for inclusion in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. In 2006, he received the “Mentor of the Year” award by the Public Relations Professionals of Long Island, as well as a “Golden Apple” educator award from the Long Island chapter of the March of Dimes.

A graduate of Emerson College in Boston, Hanc received his master’s degree from the journalism school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is an active member of both the American Society of Journalists and Authors and the Association for Education in Journalism.

A fitness devotee and runner himself, Hanc completed his 22nd career marathon in March, 2007.
